Peter Lamas emigrated to NYC at 17 from Cuba under the regime of Fidel Castro, and with the help of a friend, began moonlighting in the beauty business as a way to fund his college studies in commercial art, photography and art. He soon realized he had a flair for hairstyling and makeup artistry, and the rest is history. He worked at famous salons Vidal Sassoon and Kenneth Salon Townhouse, alongside Paul Mitchell and in his own trio of NYC salons, The Reapers. His list of famous clients is long and impressive, and includes the late icons Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, Jackie Kennedy and Elizabeth Taylor.
Through personal experiences with close friends, family and clients he learned about the cancer-causing effects of many common beauty products. He founded Peter Lamas Products because he wanted to research all he could about the relation between health, beauty and ingredients. His mission is “to deliver high-performance beauty products that contain healthy, natural ingredients, free of harmful chemicals.” Additionally, he does outreach as an author and speaker to educate consumers about the facts and myths about the beauty industry and product ingredients.
Chinese Herbs Line
The Peter Lamas brand of products includes hair, skin and body care products that are vegan, paraben-free, cruelty-free with certified organic ingredients and eco-friendly packaging. I recently had an opportunity to try a sampling of items from the brand, including the 5-step Chinese Herbs revitalizing hair care collection. I’m a fan of the products, which have found a home next to my usual brand, Martens Tomas.
Peter Lamas Chinese Herbs Stimulating Shampoo is intended to stimulate the scalp and energize weak hair. It promises to inhibit DHT buildup, gently removing follicle-blocking sebum and debris, which can cause hair loss or slow growth. It also reduces dandruff and soothes itchiness. I enjoyed the foaminess and scent of the product, which reminded me of eucalyptus mint.
Peter Lamas Chinese Herbs Stimulating Conditioner was lightweight and effective. The formula hydrated the ends of my long hair well but never weighed my hair down at the roots when I massaged it into my scalp. One of the all-star ingredients is polygonum multiflorum extract, which is used by Chinese doctors to treat thinning hair, and popular for its ability to restore texture and color to greying hair.
Apple stem cells and swertia extract aid in scalp circulation and stimulate your hair follicles to increase hair growth when you use the Peter Lamas Chinese Herbs Regenerating Scalp Serum. If cold weather and climate change makes your head itch, this liquid can provide cooling relief. Apply after washing your hair and at bedtime.
Peter Lamas Chinese Herbs Revitalizing Mist is a leave-in conditioning treatment that eliminates frizz as it prepares your hair for styling. I noticed a pleasant scent and a visible difference in the volume of my wavy hair when I used it, plus an overall improvement in my hair’s brilliance without any oiliness. It’s enhanced with panthenol and wheat protein to make your hair appear thicker and fuller. I also used it during the day to revive my curls.
The final step in the set is the multi-use Peter Lamas Chinese Herbs Revitalizing Styling Cream. It provides UV protection and can be used as a protective base for styling tools to prevent heat damage, too. Use it on your wet hair before blow-drying or afterward on dry hair to finish styling. I used it on my air-dried hair and appreciated that it was weightless and left no sticky texture whatsoever.
