The Pantone Color Institute has highlighted a color of the year annually since 2000. This hue-coding method principally referenced by printing and interior design pros became buzzworthy in the beauty world back in 2012 following a Pantone partnership with Sephora who touted the Tangerine Tango shade with a limited-edition line of cosmetics products.
Orchids in Bloom for Spring
Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute calls the selected shade for 2014 “a magical color that denotes creativity and innovation.” Radiant orchid was chosen because it is an attracting, complex and interesting color.
Trend-watchers can mark their clocks because come springtime, you’ll be seeing the radiant orchid shade cropping up all over retailers’ shelves, not only in the makeup aisle but throughout apparel and accessories to decorate yourself and home.
Steppes to Orchid Eyes
Eye Steppes in goCool is a three-level mirrored compact with four shades of purple eye shadows you can blend for a ravishing rendition of radiant orchid eyes. I used a fluffy makeup brush to apply a wash of champagne-colored “Ice” eye shadow to create a shimmery base. “Mittens” is a mauve pink with delicate golden flecks that makes a subtle crease color that pops when shaded with silver-flecked lavender “Zhivago.” Matte colors “Cold Snap” a deep grape and “Mulled Wine” in vivid eggplant make lovely liner colors for fair complexions and can be used in the crease for shading with deeper skin tones.
For added drama, the Jane Iredale Liquid Eyeliner in Black is ideal for achieving an eye-catching cat eye. But a steady hand is a must for mastering this technique. Practice makes perfect, and a Q-Tip works wonders for correcting any mistakes.
To finish your orchid eyes, apply a couple coats of Longest Lash Thickening and Lengthening mascara. The squeezable tube is designed to help prevent clumping. This formula won’t just make your lashes look more lush, they really will become healthier. The brand’s proprietary blend of natural ingredients including seaweed lipids will hydrated and protect your lashes when applied.
Jane Iredale Cosmetics promises “petal-soft” lips when using the 24 shades of creamy PureMoist® Lipstick (winner in the O! Magazine 2013 Fall Makeup Awards). A botanical blend of orange peel wax, and oils of avocado, moringa and sunflower seeds condition and hydrate while coffee seed extract and Vitamins A and C deliver antioxidant protection. The lipsticks’ fruity scent and juicy flavor are derived from extracts of organic blackberry and pomegranate.
Apply straight from the streamlined golden tube (which comes with a clear top so you can search shades quickly if you have a collection) or use a lip color brush and layer to your desired depth. A few of my matte favorites for coordinating with the goCool eyeshadow palette include “Ann” a red wine shade, “Annette” a red grape color and “Mary” a plum hue.
Jane Iredale’s Quad Bronzer in “Rose Dawn” will give an all-over glow to every skin type, and works well for creating a cherub-like cheek when used as a blush. Apply the colors individually as eye shadows – they complement the goCool palette wonderfully – or run the sheer shade along your brows, décolleté and collar bones to create captivating shimmer.
